Technology, distance learning, and shorter courses offer the means to acquire new skills in ways that may not have been possible before. But a career change is a major decision, something that can’t be made overnight or on impulse. Think long and hard about these five points before you make that leap.
1. Do You Really Want To Change Careers?
Study your situation and options. Are you unhappy because you don’t see eye to eye with your boss? The solution may be a lateral move to another department where you are a better fit. Do you dislike your daily work tasks? Consider requesting a different set of responsibilities. For example, ask to do sales fieldwork if telemarketing bores you to tears.
2. Do You Know What You Want?
You need to analyze yourself–who you are, what you enjoy doing, what your goals and aspirations are. At the same time, take note of your strengths and weaknesses as well as your skills, experiences, and qualifications.
3. Do You Have A New Career In Mind?
You need to choose the one that’s right for you. Read and research trade magazines, news articles, and career websites about fields that hold your interest until you zero in on your target occupation.
4. Can You Transfer Those Skills?
Some skills come in handy regardless of the industry you’re in. Hard skills like computer know-how and soft skills such as communication abilities are always in demand.
5. Are You Willing To Take A Pay Cut Or Start From Scratch?
More than likely, you will be offered an entry-level job to match your level of experience and skills in a new field. In fact, you might even have to work as a temporary worker initially just to gain a foothold in the industry.
