Can you really get all your RDI of vitamins + minerals from regular food?
Q: With out the use of a vitamin tablet, is it actually possible to get all the RDI of vitamins and minerals with out going over the calorie + cholesterol limits?for example, walnuts are higher in zinc, yet you would need to east some 400 grams of walnuts to get 100% of your RDIRDI = Recommended dietary intake.The diet can not be lacking in anything, possible or not?It just seems if you go after everything that is in the RDI you will find it kinda hard/impossible to eat that much.
A: Yes, but you can look for zinc in other foodstuffs too.
Zinc sputter coating question?
Q: I think it is a long shot at finding help for this on YA, but here goes.I do reactive sputter deposition at work. One of our processes is reactive sputtering a zinc oxide film using a metallic zinc (actually ZnAl) target and a reactive oxide process. I cannot go into specific process setpoints for obvious reasons. The target is a 2 meter rotatable cylindrical magnetron.The chamber has overhead infrared heaters which we use prior to production to bake moisture out of the chamber. This is necessary to the integrity of our process. Inside the chamber, the wire leads to the infrared bulbs are not insulated due to the high temperatures. Where the leads go through the shielding enclosure to reach the bulbs, they are protected by insulating ceramic inserts. The problem I have is that the ceramic inserts get coated over with zinc causing the leads to short out usually destroying the bulb…they are very expensive. Even though the path from the target to the bulbs is complex, our initial conclusion was that the zinc was being sputtered onto the ceramic inserts as part of our normal sputtering process. We modified the chamber shielding to the point where this is basically inconceivable, and expected the problem to be solved. It isn’t. In researching this problem, I stumbled across what I now believe is the most likely explanation: zinc has a very high vapor pressure (1mTorr at 290 degrees C). The pressure and temperatures we use during bake-out are such that the zinc is apparently evaporating and the saturated zinc vapor is permeating the chamber, and coating the ceramic inserts (along with everything else).Unfortunately, baking out the chamber at a lower temperature and/or higher pressure is not considered an option.The solutions I can think of are to switch to ceramic zinc oxide targets (expensive and takes time to optimize/qualify), or to cool the target during bake-out (this is being investigated) or to figure out a way to insulate the leads. Insulating the leads is by far the easiest if there were a suitable material/method of doing so. Does anyone know of a wire insulation material that is vacuum compatible and can withstand 400 degrees C? Any other proposed solutions would also be appreciated. A: Ok.Option one. Write to somebody at http://www.radix-wire.com. Googled high temp wiring and these guys seem to know their stuff. They can make high temp vacuum wiring for the space shuttle they can do it for you. here is a quote “Take, for example, a space shuttle application, where high-temperature wire and cable materials are exposed to space. The combination of environmental factors – a vacuum, radiant heat, and high levels of radiation – virtually eliminates every known extruded polymer available as an insulation material because it might become conductive or fail in this environment. For such an extreme environmental application, specifiers are left with inorganic materials – such as fiberglass or ceramic fiber – as their only wire or cable insulation choice. “Or Option 2. Find out if the vapourised zinc is rising. You said the infrared bulbs are overhead. move them to heat the chamber from below. Maybe option 3 is to your liking.If the zinc is causing a short circuit and the bulbs are blowing first fit zener diodes to the supply lines (if they are DC) to limit the current that can conceivably reach the lamps to barely over the actual current draw. This way when it shorts so long as its is in the current controlled loop the bulbs won’t blow but will merely go out until the short is cleared. OR fit underrated fuses (AC supply) that blow before the bulbs in the shorting instance. Not a real solution but a bit of a workaround.
