A: Plasma contains a lot of proteins and clotting factors that can be isolated and given individually, or plasma can be given as a transfusion to give all of the factors.The most significant thing that we use fresh frozen plasma (FFP) for is to increase the amount of clotting factors. If someone is deficient in all of the clotting factors (from bleeding, or using them up from too much clotting, or just isn’t making them), we’ll transfuse some FFP to prevent bleeding and aid in clotting.We transfuse red blood cells to treat anemia or severe blood loss, but the red blood cell units do not contain much plasma. After about 5 units, the patient’s blood becomes too diluted with donor blood and IV fluids to clot properly, and we give a few units of FFP at that time (along with some platelets).If someone is deficient in just one factor, as occurs in some genetic conditions such as hemophilia, preparations of just that factor can be given.There are other proteins in plasma that can be separated out and used therapeutically.
