Why do shipbuilders put pieces of zinc on the hulls of iron ships?
Q:
A: This is to do with CORROSION (RUSTING)By attaching Zinc plates to the side of iron ships, the process of corrosion is stopped.Without the zinc plates, water and oxygen would begin to corrode the ship until it was unseaworthy.Attaching zinc plates allows the zinc to take the place of the iron in the corrosion. When the iron begins to corrode, the zinc and iron form a cell. The zinc plates react with the iron and vice versa. As the iron begins to corrode the metal iron begins to deposit on the zinc plates, and as a result the zinc plates lose electrons which are deposited on the iron. This process continues for the entire journey of the ship. Because electrons are being constantly fed onto the iron, the iron will never rust.
