Interested to hear peoples opinions on how best to control your mind, and/or get the best out of it?

Q:Over the last few years I have looked at many different methods of developing inner peace, and mind contol(meditation, tai chi, mantras, proverbs, ancient knowledge, religion etc). One of the best ways I have found, is the importance of managing internal stimuli ie negative thoughts, intrusive thoughts, feelings and emotions. One of the methods is simply-meditation style-ignoring these games of the mind ie not energising. Trying not to think internally ie keeping focussed on whats around you etc, rather than focused internally/on self. Any thoughts on this? Is it best to simply not think about self, and let the brain/mind do its thing? Almost a paradox-to get the best from the mind requires stopping your thoughts? Big topic I know, any thoughts on this subject(s) would be appreciated and read with interest. Many thanks.

I find this topic very interesting. First, let me just say that ridding your mind of its negative thoughts really has HUGE health benefits. As unbelieveable as it sounds, many “illnesses” can be cured by simply turning the body’s negative energy into positive energy. I have heard that such tai chi, meditation, and using Feng Shui in your home and office are excellent ways of managing the negative thoughts and energy of daily life. The Feng Shui, which is an ancient Oriental method of arranging things, allows energy to flow better, reducing stress, and generates vibrant health. It might be interesting to use this with tai chi or something along those lines, and see if that increases the effectivness. I’m no expert on this topic, so that’s about the extent of my input, but I hope it’s useful in some way. : )
“One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well. For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy.” Gita 6.5-6″My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga. In this way develop a desire to attain Me.” Gita 12.9The regulative principles of the bhakti yoga is non intoxication, do not eat meat, illicit sex, gambling; offer the food to the Lord before eat it, don’t eat food prepare by ordinary people, chant the Lord’s Krishna name regularly and etc , so occupied the mind in high thinking and high activities.
Clear your mind of cant. Dr. Johnson.
Controlling of the mind and higher levels are reached only through the breath meditation. At the beginning you will find that you cannot concentrate on the breath as other thoughts come in. If you sit down and close your eyes you will notice that your mind is jumping from one thought to another. Even though you want to concentrate on your breath you will find other thoughts also coming in between. To calm and control your mind you must follow every thought that comes into you mind. You must be like a Manager of a Hotel who stands at the entrance and observes the customers coming in. Without getting attached to the thoughts try to observe them. You will find that a thought comes in and that it goes nowhere and another thought follows it – try following that too – with same results. This way you will find that your thoughts gradually subside. Do not try to force out your thoughts.Thereafter you must start concentrating on your breath. Notice the breath coming in and going out. You should not concentrate only on the tip of your nose. Notice the breath coming in and thereafter your lungs getting filled and then gradually exhaling the breath. You will reach a stage where the mind takes over the breathing and you will not physically feel the breathing. It will be more like ‘happy breathing’.
Hi, I am on the same pathway as you are at the moment. I found a lovely book by Louise Hay, You can heal yourself. She talks about the holistic person and amongst other things: you are not your mind, it is a tool for you to use; and the only thing we can control is the current thought. You can order the book (and other by Hay) online.Hope this helps!
May I recommend this book to help you on your journey. Quantum Consciousness. by Stephen Wolinsky.A guide to experiencing quantum psychology. It is full of mental exercises to help you develop your consciousness.Everything (thoughts, feelings, emotions, sensations, associations) is made of energy.Once you have experienced yourself as the Observer, then you can begin to experience how all the things you observe going on in “your mind” are made of the same underlying energy. Anger is made up of the same energy that joy is.
