‘Boy Toys’ Little Girls Should Own

I wrote recently about girl toys that toddler boys should own. The response was mixed. For every person who agreed with me, there seemed to be another who scoffed at the idea that boys should own strollers or baby dolls. My attention turned to the other side of the spectrum. With three daughters and two nephews, I find myself wondering-are there any toys that are traditionally seen as boy toys that little girls should own, too?

Blocks

Don’t limit yourself to the Mega Blocks or Duplo that come in pink, either. Purchase the kits that come with a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to delight all children. Get the construction hat themed carrying case to hold the blocks, or the red brick construction blocks that are as big as a box of cereal. My daughters absolutely loved playing with blocks, and even now that they’re older, they want Lego before any old Barbie doll.

Train & Train Tracks

The train table and all things Thomas the Tank Engine are typically billed towards little boys. That doesn’t have to be, and shouldn’t be, the case. Building long train tracks across the kitchen floor is a great way to spend the morning for toddler boys and toddler girls alike. Consider a small wooden track with a few trains for your little girl to play with, too.

Tool Bench

The small plastic or wooden tool bench is another toy that’s traditionally geared towards boys but can be just as entertaining for little girls. With screws that turn and make noise, the ability to hammer in large plastic or wooden nails, and maybe even a little drill, how can you go wrong? Little boys and little girls will love it!

Cars & Trucks

The collection of Hot Wheels at my house isn’t for the faint of heart. I didn’t just purchase them to entertain my two year old nephew, either. The collection first belonged to my oldest daughter when she was just a toddler, and it has grown over the years. Not only should you think about small racing cars to play with once your daughters are old enough keep the small parts out of their mouths, but consider a large yellow dump truck to haul toys or store blocks. They aren’t just for little boys, either!

Action Figures

Don’t restrict your girls to Barbie dolls or Bratz (please, don’t get me started). Star Wars action figures, for instance, are still relevant and popular among today’s toddlers, preschoolers, and beyond. My nephew adores Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and my girls are pretty interested in playing with them, too.

What other traditional boy toys have your little girls loved? Or is there no way that your toddler girl would even own her own train set?
