Easy Broomstick Lace Scarf Instructions

The process known as broomstick lace is categorized within the crochet group of stitches. The stitch itself is an open weave completed around a special jiffy pin that looks like a large knitting needle. The jiffy pin is approximately 1-inch in diameter and 13-inches long. A crochet hook is used to create the stitch. The open weave lends itself well to the creation of scarves, shopping bags, baby blankets and sweaters. Try your hand at a simple broomstick lace scarf to learn the technique.

Broomstick Lace Instructions:

Step 1 – Chain 30 stitches. Slide the loop on your crochet hook onto the #50 Jiffy Lace needle.
Step 2 – Insert the crochet hook into the next chain. Pull the loop through the chain and place it on the end of the Jiffy Lace needle. Repeat the process in each chain for a total of 30 loops.
Step 3 – Point the Jiffy Lace needle to the right. Slide the crochet hook through the first five loops on the Jiffy Lace needle. Yarn over the crochet hook and pull it through the five loops. Yarn over the crochet hook a second time and pull it through the loop on the crochet hook.
Step 4 – Slide the five loops off the Jiffy Lace needle. Complete 5 single crochet stitches in the top of the loop.
Step 5 – Slide the crochet hook under the next five loops on the Jiffy Lace needle. Yarn over the crochet hook and pull the yarn through the five loops. Two loops are now on the crochet hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the two stitches on the crochet hook. Remove the group of loops from the Jiffy lace needle. Complete 4 single crochet stitches in the top of the group. Repeat this step 4 times for a total of 6 groups of loops. The loop of the last single crochet stitch remains on the crochet hook.
Step 6 – Slide the loop on the crochet hook over the Jiffy Lace needle. Insert the hook in the next stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch. Slide the loop off the crochet hook and onto the Jiffy Lace needle. Repeat the process across the row.
Step 7 – Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until the scarf is the desired length.
Step 8 – Finish the last single crochet stitch by cutting the yarn approximately 2-inches from the last stitch. Yarn over the crochet hook and pull the yarn through the last loop. Pull tightly to form a knot. Weave the excess yarn back and forth through the last row of stitching.

Tips: A smaller #35 Jiffy Lace needle is available to make projects with a smaller opening. Try both to see which one you like better.
