Five Players Who Could Win the Premier League’s Golden Boot

The Premier League is now underway, but it will be 38 game weeks before a champion and a Golden Boot winner are crowned. There are a number of new players in the premier league, a few on new teams, and a few looking to bounce back from subpar years last season.

Here are five such players that could win the Golden Boot this year:

Fernando Torres

Suffice it to say Fernando Torres did not have a great season last year. He transferred from Liverpool to Chelsea in January and scored only a single time in a Chelsea uniform. His poor form could possibly be attributed to a change of scenery and unfamiliar offensive schemes employed by Carlo Ancelotti. Torres has a new boss this season, and a full summer of training with the rest of the team. If he can regain his stellar form, Torres can once again be one of the most lethal strikers in England.

Wayne Rooney

As long as Rooney is healthy, he will score goals for Manchester United. Rooney’s goal scoring took a backseat last season to Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez. This year Hernandez will be marked tighter which should provide Rooney with additional opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. Man U is flush with wonderful wingers who can also provide Rooney numerous chances in the box.

Sergio Aguero

Aguero is new to the premier league this year, recently transferring to Manchester City from Atletico Madrid. “Kun” Aguero is a prolific goal scorer who played in the shadow of Barcelona and Real Madrid players while in Spain. Aguero is only 23 and has many more productive years ahead of him. He will probably be the top striker for Manchester City, despite all of their redundancies at the attacking positions.

Robin Van Persie

RVP could have won many Golden Boot’s already, his problem is health. Van Persie scored a career best 18 premier league goals in the 2010-2011 season, despite playing in only 25 games due to injury. Arsenal plays a fast paced style that results in many goals. If RVP can keep away from injuries and stay on the field he has a very good chance to lead the league in scoring.

Luis Suarez

Suarez is another newcomer to the premier league. Suarez joined Liverpool last winter from Ajax and made an immediate impact. He scored five times in 14 games and appears to be the primary option up front with Andy Carroll. Both will battle for goals this year, but Suarez has a bit more skill and is more adept at scoring from all over the field. Liverpool will be hard pressed to find a better option than Suarez.
