Healthy Breakfast Ideas for the Whole Family

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so they say. Don’t let frozen waffles and squeezable yogurt as they run out the door be the food that fuels your children on a school day. You don’t have to spend hours over a hot stove in order to put together a healthy breakfast your whole family will love. These quick and healthy breakfast ideas can please your entire family this week.

Pancakes with fresh fruit

Add some fruit to your pancakes for a breakfast treat your kids will love. Fresh bananas or blueberries are perfect choices. Top your pancakes with honey instead of heavy maple syrup. Need more protein? Top with a teaspoon of peanut butter instead. Serve milk on the side instead of a sugary juice.

Fruit smoothie & whole wheat toast

Get out the blender and make healthy fruit smoothies for the whole family. My husband loves to add protein powder to his, while my girls want nothing but milk, strawberries, and bananas. Whatever you add, you can guarantee that you know the ingredients and what your kids are eating. Serve whole wheat toast with peanut butter for some extra protein before everyone heads out the door.

Organic yogurt with granola

Organic yogurt (try plain or vanilla flavored) can be the perfect breakfast option for parents and kids alike. My husband loves to top his with vanilla flavored granola, while my girls love to add simple toasted oats to the top for a little crunch.

Egg sandwiches/burritos

Make your own egg sandwiches with scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast. Turn them into breakfast burritos with fresh veggies if your family loves some spice in the morning. Add some shredded cheddar cheese or a slice of ham according to individual taste. Are you in a pinch for time? You can microwave eggs in on a microwaveable plate. Offer a small glass of orange juice to round out the meal.

Cereal with fresh fruit

Even a simple bowl of healthy cereal can be enjoyable when you add something special. Slice up fresh fruit and mix the two together. Kids will love the sweetness fruit adds to the most boring of cereals. Serve it with milk or water.

Breakfast-to-go

If you don’t have time for a sit down meal with the family, pre-package simple, healthy, breakfast-to-go options. Cheese cubes, sliced apple, and nuts provide plenty of nutrition and energy to get everyone’s day off to a great start.

Bagels

Even my two year old daughter loves a bagel with cream cheese. Select fresh bagels instead of frozen. If you’re watching your calories, select a low-fat cream cheese. Garden vegetable flavored spread may please the adults, while the strawberry-flavored variety will please the little ones. Add sliced tomatoes or fresh fruit to the bagel to complete the meal.

A healthy breakfast can help everyone start the day off right!
