How Stay Healthy While Traveling During Cold and Flu Season

A cold or flu bug can be unpleasant at the best of times but getting sick while traveling can be especially unpleasant. This is doubly true during the holiday season when so many more people are traveling. And really what could be worse than being confined to your hotel room while the rest of the family are enjoying the holidays?

Luckily there are a few things that you can do to reduce and hopefully eliminate your risk of getting sick while traveling. Many of these things are the usual common sense ways to avoid getting sick like making sure to not touch your face and practicing good hand washing techniques also if soap and water are not available make sure to use some kind of alcohol based hand cleaner.

Germs can lurk on surfaces for up to three days, making it easy to infect a lot of people so be careful when touching door handles and other surfaces that other people have touched. Bring your own disinfectant and make sure to wipe down surfaces in your motel room like the phone, clock, remote control light switches and door handles. And if you decide to use the hotel gym don’t forget to disinfect the gym equipment before you use it.

Put together a health travel kit just in case, because it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Your kit should contain cold medicine, fever – pain relievers, chicken soup, cough drops, vapor rub, tissues, saline nasal spray, a hot water bottle and or heat pad.

Cut back on or eliminate junk food and try to eat a healthy diet that contains plenty of antioxidants that will help to boost your immune system before and during your trip. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids like black or green tea which help to lower your chances of catching the flu. Taking a good probiotic or eating yogurt that contains active cultures helps to stimulate your white blood cells.

Don’t over indulge in alcohol as this tends to lower your immune system, and try to relax as being under stress puts you at greater risk to get sick.
