Zombies are the undead, risen from the grave. Well, some of them actually never make it to the grave. It was once believed that zombies were corpses that rose because of voodoo, like in ‘Snake People’ staring Boris Karloff, but now it seems that most zombies are created by some sort of disease or biological attack. In the beginning zombies were slow. The zombies in ‘Night of the Living Dead’ were slow creatures who really just went after the people they could see in front of them. As the zombie genre has grown so have the abilities of the zombies. Now zombies move much faster, even running. They can also think and work together, like the zombies in ’28 Days Later’ and ’28 Weeks Later.’ As we become less afraid of the slow, bumbling zombie, they become more frightening and lethal.
Zombies need to be killed. There is no getting around it, especially if you find yourself surrounded by zombies that can spread the zombie virus. The only real way to kill a zombie it by destroying the brain. As the county sheriff in the ‘Dawn of the Dead’ remake said, ” Just shoot them in the head! They seem to go down permanently if you shoot ‘em in the head. Then, you gotta burn them!” How you destroy the brain kind of depends on the zombie. When faced with a fast or “smart” zombie you are going to want to kill them from a distance. Getting too close could mean a fatal injury. Use a rifle for picking zombies off at a distance. You can even make a game of it, like in aforementioned remake of ‘Dawn of the Dead’, by shooting celebrity look-a-like zombies. Other good weapons for distance killing would be a compound bow or crossbow, which was used in the new television series ‘The Walking Dead.’
When going after slower zombies you’ll have many more killing options, all though guns do seem to work the best. Pistols and shotguns are great for killing the walking dead at close range. Hitting them in the head with various items may bring you success also. ‘Zombieland’ used an array of creative zombie killing weapons; toilet tank lid, hedge clippers, banjo, and an aluminum baseball bat. The guys in ‘Shaun of the Dead’ used some clever zombie killing devices too; pool sticks, cricket bats, shovels and even records. You just need to remember to aim for the head with as much force as possible. Kill the brain, kill the zombie. My question is, though, do you really want to try to get that close to a zombie? Sure, a slow moving zombie is an easy kill, but what about those running zombies in ’28 Days Later.’ I’d rather use a gun.
The most important thing to remember, when dealing with the spread of zombieism, is to not let them bite you and to not let their blood get into your body. When using melee weapons be sure not to get blood in your mouth or in any open wounds. When you get zombiefied you’ll be the next to die!
