How to Make Homemade Granola

Granola is widely held as a food for “health nuts” – and for good reason! The snack is healthy, delicious and filling. However, if you are in the habit of purchasing granola or granola bars from the store, you know that it is relatively expensive. So what’s in the magic snack that drives up the price at the grocery store? Well, not much.

Granola is made from rolled oats (oatmeal, basically), honey, brown sugar and a drop of vanilla extract. That’s it. Common, cheap household ingredients that cost little at the grocery store. So what about the baking process? Oven for 20 minutes and – Voila! – delicious granola. If you’re tired of paying extra for convenience, read on to learn how to make your own granola at home.

Ingredients
2 cups rolled oats
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
3 tbsp oil
(Optional) handful of almonds, cranberries or other fruits and nuts

Preheat the oven to 325 F.

In a large bowl, sift together the salt, cinnamon and oats. In a separate bowl, combining the remaining ingredients, minus the optional ingredients. Use a whisk to stir together the oil, brown sugar and honey mixture. Stir vigorously, as the mixture will be extremely viscous.

Pour the liquid mixture over the rolled oats. Using your hands, thoroughly mix the honey mixture into the oats. The oats should turn a dark brown color.

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Pour the granola evenly over the cookie sheet. Place the granola in the oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, turn the granola and add the almonds/cranberries. Bake for another 10 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool. I recommend serving with fat free yogurt.
Store the remaining granola in an airtight container.
