Recap: ‘Dexter,’ Season 6, Episode 12, ‘This is the Way the World Ends’

“Dexter,” Season 6, Episode 12, “This is the Way the World Ends,” sees Dexter being rescued from drowning by a boatload of Cuban refugees. There is an irony that sees Dexter returned to life while the others are brought to freedom.

Spoilers follow.

Debra’s realization that she wants to be ravaged by her brother continues to be creepy. It is a commentary, one supposes, that we are no longer shocked by Dexter’s need to kill people but are put off by Debra’s apparent need to have inappropriate sex with the most inappropriate man of all.

In the meantime, the hunt for Travis continues. Another murder scene suggests that he has gone to ground, which means that he may never be caught. While this distress’s Debra, she is comforted — surprisingly — by LaGuerta. Perhaps by bumping off Edwards from his position as Assistant Chief, LaGuerta has what she wants and no longer wants to torture Debra. Or maybe she thinks she can manipulate her Homicide Lieutenant by being kind.

It turns out that Travis has not done yet. There is to be a total eclipse of the sun over South Florida. Travis has decided that God requires a blood sacrifice and who better than the little son of the Beast, aka Dexter’s son Harrison.

This turns out to be a big mistake on Travis’s part. Shocked to see that the Beast has survived the lake of fire tableau. Travis flips. Dexter, by feigning an act of self-sacrifice, manages to overcome Travis. He then takes the mad religious murderer to the abandoned church where it all started, where Debra has already asked him to do one final forensics sweep.

Dexter and Travis have a nice conversation about the nature of God and what he expects from his servants. Ever adhering to the Code of Harry, Dexter explains to Travis why what he did was wrong. Then, after the blood slide is collected, Dexter sends Travis to eternity with a thrust to the heart from a bronze sword.

And now the twist.

Debra, knowing that Dexter was at the abandoned church, has come there herself, to do what one can only imagine. But now she has seen her brother, her one true love, at work.

Season 7 cannot come fast enough.
