Ten Haikus on Receiving Bad News

Prologue

The unseen shoe drops.

The sword falls with a clatter.

And now? It’s undone.

The Reveal

She’s blinking in shock.

Her life – scrambled in a day.

Which direction now?

Reaction

She sees what’s occurred.

With the news, her stomach turns.

Tragedy, now fact.

Rejection

“No – it cannot be.”

The pain is just too surreal.

This is not her life.

Rage

Mean-spirited world:

What’s the worth of anything,

if it’s all unfair?

Reevaluation

Hypotheticals.

Fighting with one-thousand ‘if’s.

Could things get better?

Rust

Hands – broken under

the heavy shells of remorse.

Broadcasting for help.

Reason

Compromise. Patience.

They can’t make it all okay,

but there’s strength in there.

Recovery

The shockwave passes.

The ego remains intact.

She has withstood it.

The Return

A thing of the past.

Nothing to do except heal.

Pain, and all things, fade.
