Unique Decorating Ideas for the Powder Room

The powder room typically consists of a toilet and a sink; it is often located near an entry or in the main living area of a house, where visitors can easily access it. Since it is such a small space, it is often overlooked when re-decorating the house. The powder room doesn’t have to be boring. Why not spice it up a little and give this room a fun touch with unique decor? Try one of these decorating ideas for your powder room.

Choose a theme or period style

Make a statement with your powder room. It is such a small space that it doesn’t take much to make a big impact. Choose a theme, such as nautical, a bold color scheme or a period style. Victorian is a good choice if you live in an older house with traditional decorations. For a contemporary home, perhaps a bold color scheme–lime green with white accents, for example–will make a statement about your fun personality.

Design your own tile backsplash

Make the backsplash a focal point in your bathroom. Your options are virtually limitless when it comes to tile designs. First, decide where you want the tile, whether it is just the wall behind your vanity or a tile wainscoting around the perimeter or the room. Then, you need to choose a material: glass, stone, ceramic or something else. Design a custom pattern (or hire a designer to do it for you) that will set this room apart from any other.

Hang bold, patterned wallpaper

Wallpaper is coming back into popularity. I have seen it often in small bathrooms and powder rooms with bold patterns, such as stripes, circles, damask or geometric shapes. Often, it is paired with white, painted wainscoting to avoid overwhelming visitors with too much pattern at once. It doesn’t have to be brightly colored or overly obnoxious; just choose a nice pattern that you like.

Choose a custom vanity and mirror

Your vanity doesn’t have to be a wood cabinet with a countertop and a sink–or even a simple ceramic pedestal. It might be a simple marble top with open plumbing underneath, if contemporary is the look you crave. It might be a cabinet that is fitted with a vessel sink. You can even customize the mirror above your vanity to make a unique part of your powder room.

Make a statement with your accessories

Perhaps a complete remodel doesn’t fit into your budget. There are some smaller changes you can make to give the room a different look. For example, swap out the boring sink for a decorative vessel bowl. Hang Hollywood lights above your mirror, sculptural sconces on each side, or replace the fixtures for new ones to change it up a bit. Even a new set of decorative towels can help freshen up the powder room.
