A: Most tattoo shops have a 75 dollar minimum. Though maybe it is as low as 50 or as high as 100. They also assume you will be tipping them as well. A tattoo that size (the min) could be UP TO about 2 inches by 2 inches. After that, the larger the size the more you pay. The MOST someone could pay is basically how long they can handle the pain in one day. Some shops will charge, say, 200 for an hour if the tattoo is going to take many many hours. It would be awkward to look at a design for someone’s back and say “Oh I’ll do this for 1500” or something because people would walk right out of the shop. So they go by the hour, and maybe they can handle 6 hours, maybe they want to cry after two and just do it another day. It varies alot depending on if the shop is tourist friendly, or in a part of town where only established clients would go. Then again you have some artists who might just work for free if they’re starting out and they want to have some good samples to show later on. I’ve seen some beautiful large pieces that would cost thousands, only to have the person tell me they just bought the guy dinner because they were such good friends.
