A: Fiber is healthy and necessary, but the new fad diet of flushing your body with fiber is bad for you. Assuming you already eat enough fiber, eating more will not help you lose weight in the long run. It just gives you more bowel movements. If you take the colon cleansing fiber pills, you will initially lose weight because your body is losing all of its water, through diarrhea. This is known as bulimia and is very unhealthy- I have struggled with it, and it is no fun to be forcing yourself to the bathroom all the time. Fat is digested in the stomach, and making your waste go through the intestines faster just makes you not reabsorb the water. After a while you will gain back all of your weight, and if you tend to be less careful about your diet because of the false sense of freedom the pills give you- you will gain weight. Did I mention that you lose lots of essential nutrients, too? And once you start down this road it is really hard to get back to being healthy. If you want to do this the right way, you should talk to your doctor about modifying your diet- eating steamed vegetables, and less sugar and red meat, etc. and exercise regularly.
