How can I stop late night sugar cravings?
Q: I find that over the last 6 months , I gained a lot of weight and crave sugar, candy, junk. I am 45 yrs. old and a single parent of 3 and have been on prozac for depression . My cravings are mainly in the evening and my depression has gotten worse and I am having trouble getting out of bed. I went from a very strict healthy diet and exercise to such an extreme change in diet and attitude. I have also been very angry and feel as though my Doctor was quick to give pills and I question his advice . Any advice ??
A: By all means, go back to the diet and exercise regimen that you had before. Exercise is supposed to help with depression. Also, ween yourself off of the Prozac. Do not try to go cold turkey. Then talk to your doctor about trying to do something else. Also, read up on some holistic methods. They are the same things that your parents, and probably your great grandparents did. An article in TIME magazine said that we should not eat anything that our grandparents and great grandparents wouldn’t recognize as food.

Q: I told myself that from now on I’m going to start my new years resolution 2 months in advance and I have. Then I set a goal to loose my gut and chisel my arms. I’ve been at the gym and I FEEL GREAT!! Especially when I work out, go home and shower up, then go to work. I had no idea exercising can have such an impact. Anywow the question…THE ONLY PROBLEM i have is when I come home from work, I still have my old habit of going straight to the fridge. I don’t know why.. sometimes I find myself opening the door and realizing I’m not hungry but opening it in my mind is like a routine or bad habit I can’t seem to loose. My diet: I try to eat every 2-4 hrs and my diet consists of mainly fruits and vegetables with one low carb low fat meal no more than a handful a day. No carbs after 2pm only protein. This might sound extreme but I’m thinking of taking sleeping pills or maybe some wine every night bc I tend to wake up around noon with this 2nd shift job of mines (3:30pm – MN) but I don’t go to bed until around 3AM. I feel like if I can control my sleeping habit it’ll help. So I figure if I take sleeping pills after I shower, that’ll limit my visits to the fridge until next day. What do you think? Please offer suggestions. If I can do this, I can probably kill 100-500 calories cheating on chips, cookies, crackers, etc.
A: As a diabetic, I was taught to eat a small amount of protein as a snack at night, about 3 hours before bed. Protein sustains your blood sugar and keeps you from having cravings. Though you are not diabetic, it works for anyone. Try a piece of turkey or chicken and a glass of milk. Don’t do sleeping pills, they can slow your metabolism and actually make you GAIN weight. Even a tablespoon of peanut butter will work if you have nothing else. Good Luck!
