A: Rather than looking for high iron foods that he will eat you need to focus your efforts on learning how to hide iron in the foods that he already likes. Two of my kids are picky. I have learned that wheat germ (which is high in iron) can be added to cookies and most other baked goods without the kids noticing. Spaghetti sauce is great for hiding pureed vegetables. There are a lot of iron fortified foods out there to choose from too. They have already done the work of hiding the healthy stuff for you. Carnation Instant Breakfast has 25% of the recommended daily iron and most kids love it. You could make your own snack mix from iron fortified cereals and dried fruit. Some pastas are good sources of iron.Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron. Iron from animal sources are more easily absorbed then from other sources so keep encouraging your child to eat meat. I have a book recommendation for you. It is called The Sneaky Chef. Most dieticians are recommending we steer away from eating so much meat towards eating more plant based foods.Iron is found in many vegies. Some of the highest contents of iron are in beans, especially baked beans. Tofu & soy products and lots of leafy vegies also contain iron. Unfortunately spinach has tanin in it and whilst spinach contains good iron, the tanin (like that found in tea) actually inhibits the absorption of iron ironically! Many cereal today are fortified with iron, so eat a good breakfast! Last resort would be taking iron tablets themselves.All the best,
