A: You could have many, many years left to enjoy each other’s company. COPD has many causes, especially smoking. If your friend modifies her lifestyle and makes conscious, healthy decisions, she may out live you. COPD, while incurable, does not necessarily mean a death sentence. She is young to have the disease, so there may be other lung issues, but remaining positive and remaining active physically will prolong her life. I suggest you research the disease as much as possible and do this research frequently. New treatments, clinical trials, research studies, etc. are all taking place that may actually produce a cure. In the meantime, be there to offer support, empathy, and friendship. Don’t worry about tomorrow and things you cannot control. Just worry about today. Good luck to you both.
