Is ANY dystopia “Orwellian?”?
Q: Or does it have to have certain features or characteristics to qualify? If so, what are they? What are some examples of dystopias that are or are not Orwellian? This is not a homework question, and I do have my own opinion, but I’m curious what others think.Scythian, did you see “Children of Men?” I couldn’t decide if it was just a nail-biter set in an apocalypse, or an actual biting commentary on society.
A: A “dsytopia” is the opposite of “utopia”, meaning a dysfunctional future scenario. “Orwellian” is just one example of a dysfunctional future. There are a great many sci fi stories about the future that paint a dysfunctional world, but don’t necessarily touch on Orwellian themes such as mind or media control by the State. “Idiocracy” is an example of a dystopia but not an Orwellian one, since it paints a future where stupidity dominates,It is not true that any future scenario is either utopian or dysfunctional, since any likely world scenario is going to be a mix between the two, like present day. “Planet of the Apes” would be an example of a future scenario that is neither. Other examples of science fiction movies that are dysfunctional but not Orwellian:MetropolisSoylent GreenLogan’s RunMad MaxThe MatrixThe Time Machine (2002)Edit: Deja1713, as a matter of fact, it is also the name of a medical condition, meaning, “an abnormal position of body part or organ”. Thanks for your contribution!Edit 2: Other sci fi movies that could be termed “Orwellian” are:Brave New WorldFarenheit 451BrazilGatticaV for VendettaAll of them depict totalitarian societies where special interests deliberately twist reason and norms, through propanda, media and mind control. As an instance, fire trucks, expected to save property and lives by putting out fires, are twisted in Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 into having the job of emergency burning of forbidden books.
Expository essay help please! Thesis?
Q: Right, so I’m currently writing a summitive assignment, and my teacher says if I don’t hand it in today, I can’t get my credit. I’m a decent student, I just have had a lot of personal problems, and school hasn’t been the highest priority. I’m only in gr 9.So I have to write an expository essay on the book, Secret Under My Skin, by Janet McNaughton. It’s terrible, ridiculous, and quite difficult to follow with some odd terms. I found myself quite lost, even though I’m a very good reader and do excellent in english normally. I just don’t really understand the ending mostly… Anyways, I have to write the essay demonstrating my knowledge of dystopia, which is the theme of the novel. It says :Using the characteristics of a dustopian society show how Janet McNaughton’s novel, Secret Under My Skin examined some of the problems society may face in the future.I’ve broken up three main ideas: Pollution, trends, and technology/government. Things like destroying the ozone layer, if you don’t wear a certain brand of clothing you can’t fit in, and overpopulation and the need for dumbing us down and whatnot will be some things I will cover. What would make a good thesis statement?Thx! sry this was so long and confusing, but it’s much appreciated.
A: How about something like:Throughout her novel “Secret Under My Skin”, Janet McNaughton elucidates several significant problems which may plague American (?) society in the not-too-distant future. These problems include pollution, trends forcing societal conformity, and an overbearing, meddling government which insists on creating an ignorant, and thus powerless populace. I’ve not read the novel, but you give, I think, a good enough explanation here to work from. Good luck on finishing for tomorrow! I know it sucks when life interferes with school work (and vice versa).
