Q: It seems now a days there is a ribbon for everything. A pink one for breast cancer, a brown for colon cancer, a red one for AIDs etc. What brought them on? A: Originally a red ribbon was worn by those in the Enterainment industry to bring awareness to AIDS. This was over 20 years ago when no one wanted to admit that AIDS was a problem for all humans and not just those who were gay. So a small red ribbon was worn. The yellow ribbon symbol came about from the song, “Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree” . . about a prisoner doing time and than returning home to his girl. In the 80’s our Embassy was overrun in Iran and US diplomats and their employees were taken hostage for over a year.
