poly cystic ovarian disease?
Q: so my doctor ran blood tests because i have had the most screwed up period ever. They found high levels of insulin in my hormone levels or something and they think its poly cystic ovarian disease. first off. Is it a hereditary disease? I understand what it is and what they symptoms and that kinda stuff are. but are there major complications with it?my mom doesnt seem to think i have it. What else could be causing the increased insulin? (FYI i don’t have diabetes they checked that too)

what is poly cystic ovarian disease? what are treatments for a person wanting to conceive?
A: It isn’t a disease–it’s a syndrome, commonly referred to as PCOS. PCOS is generally thought to be caused by insulin resistance, a state in which the cells don’t respond to insulin as efficiently as they should, so the body “thinks” that more insulin is needed and causes the pancreas to release more and more insulin. This brings glucose levels to normal, but results in excessive insulin in the body. If not treated, insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes. The high levels of insulin found in women with insulin resistance are thought to affect the ovaries, causing them to produce too many male hormones. Insulin resistance causes some of the classic symptoms of PCOS: weight gain, difficulty losing weight, skin tags, dark patches of skin (acanthosis nigricans, or AN), high lipid levels. The resulting overabundance of male hormones causes the others: anovulation (lack of regular ovulation), irregular periods, acne, thinning hair, male-pattern hair growth. Since PCOS is a syndrome, not all of us have the same symptoms, but we all have some of those symptoms. It is also important to note that not all women diagnosed with PCOS are insulin resistant, but the majority are insulin resistant or go on to develop problems with insulin. This is why women with PCOS should have regular tests for insulin resistance and diabetes.Weight loss via exercise and diet are important for women with PCOS. We are often advised to follow a diet low in processed carbohydrates and to exercise often. However, weight loss may be difficult for those with insulin resistance. This does not mean that eating well and exercising are not important–they are vital to staying healthy. However, some of us need help with weight loss. The drug metformin (Glucophage) is a common treatment for PCOS. Metformin is an insulin-regulating drug that is taken to treat insulin resistance. By correcting insulin resistance, weight loss may be easier and ovarian function may return to normal. Although metformin is not a fertility drug, many women with PCOS are able to ovulate and conceive while taking it.If metformin does not induce ovulation, the fertility drug Clomid is used in some PCOS patients to cause ovulation and aid in conception. More advanced treatments, such as IVF, are not often used in women with PCOS. Not only are these treatments expensive, they also carry more risks and are not necessary for most women. Most PCOS patients are able to conceive either on their own or with metformin or Clomid. Some women with PCOS ovulate often enough that they do not need medical intervention to become pregnant, while others may use many cycles of Clomid before conceiving, but most women with PCOS are able to get pregnant and have children.
