Cheated + Hurt by an ex-best-friend and former crush… Need advice! (long story)?
Q: Hey guys, I believe my case is (sadly) quite common nowadays. Still, I believe that putting it on writing and reading to un-biased opinions might help me find a better and easier way to cope with it.Here’s the story: A few years ago I met this girl (let’s call her “JaneyDoe”) and we became friends. At the time she had been married for 3 years and was having problems with her husband. Two years ago she and her husband separated and a year ago they got a divorce, I was one of the few people she knew who stuck with her during those trying months (we live in a town where people are quick to judge and divorceés are seen like the bubonic plague which, in my opinion, is quite dumb). During that time she tried to do all which she had not done before and during her marriage, she got a bit wild and hung out with a few shady friends, a couple of fast girls and a string of guys who would make K-Fed (on his worst behavior) look like a saint. Eventually I refused to go to nightclubs with her and her ‘friends’ because I didn’t want the kind of attention they were getting (unasked-for groping? I think I’ll pass) but we still hung out on cafes and a few parties.About a year ago I met this guy (JohnnyDoe), back then I was living abroad and taking some workshops. We got along great and remained “friends”. He called me almost every day and all that shiz, and there was some flirting but it never got serious. Even his friends kept telling me that we could make a cute couple but I stayed mum. When I went back home we stayed in contact and when he came to visit his family (we come from the same hometown) we talked and hung out. That’s when I realized I actually liked the guy, but decided to keep quiet and wait. During that time he met JaneyDoe on one of the parties we went to.When he left I told JaneyDoe all about him, the fact that I actually liked the guy and honestly hoped things might work between us. She supported me on this and seemed genuinely happy about it.A few months went by and we kept in touch through messenger and e-mails (still as friends with a bit of flirting in the mix). Everything seemed to go smoothly and when he told me that I could go and visit him with some friends during spring break I got my hopes up, rallied up three friends (JaneyDoe included) and we decided to visit. That’s how the Trip of Doom began. When we got there JohnnyDoe’s attitude toward’s me seemed a bit off, but I chalked it off to my own nervousness, then it seemed like he and JaneyDoe where best friends. My other two ‘friends’ didn’t help much either and, to top things off, I got sick. So I spent a week being ‘jokingly mocked’ by my ‘friends’ (because I was sick, nauseous, pale and quiet most of the trip), had to ‘suck-it-up’ and see JaneyDoe flirting with JohnnyDoe one moment and ‘being supportive’ to me the next. I was phisically and emotionally weak and could barely deal with getting up on the morning and keeping a straight face for the sake of the trip (as in “do not ruin it just because you’re sick”) So that might have been the longes week I’ve ever had. Finally the trip ended, I went back home tired, a few pounds lighter, sad, disappointed and confused. Back then I didn’t know what had hit me and thought that Janey and John had just fallen in love and that was that. I even kept going out with the “friends” that went on the trip with me (yup, I was veeeeeery… ehhm… confused? *cough-stupid-cough*) eventually, when I felt better, a few things that happened during the trip started making sense (yup, I was miss slow-braincell back then) and I found out that Janey had been talking to Johnny on messenger waaay before the trip (she failed to mention this to while supporting me and telling me to ‘go for it’), it seems she used all the info I had given her on him and Johnny fell for her via messenger. When my mind finally ‘clicked’ I felt terrible. I was angry and feeling betrayed. I called Janey and told her off (no screaming, cussing or anything of the sort, I was actualy on my best behavior!) I told her I couldn’t trust her, and that I couldn’t believe that she could betray me like this. I simply asked her not to call me again. Johnny suddenly stopped talking to me on messenger (well duh!) and less that a week later they where officially a couple.By then I felt like hell, I had been used by a person whom I trusted and once considered a good friend, she had stepped on me in order to get ‘the guy’. I was also disappointed because ‘the guy’ turned out to be gullible and easily manipulated by someone he barely knew. what was I thinking by choosing those people as friends or that guy as a love interest? why didn’t I see the OBVIOUS signs? soooo I spent months rehashing the trip and feeling disappointed in myself for falling for such an obvious ruse. The thing is, JaneyDoe has been trying to contact me in order to be ‘friends’ again. I’ve been avoiding her like the plague (she probably is) while trying to stay pSorry about the lenght and thank you for your advice! (and, of course, for reading) I’m currently ‘getting over’ the fact and your answers tell me I might be on the right track. Thanks for the support! 😀 happy Holidays
A: Don’t have anything to do with either of them again. They are both equally at fault and not worth you getting upset over. ‘Janey’ will never be close to you again as you will never trust her. If you want to, keep her as an acquaintance, but never as a friend. She did it once to you, she will do it again. She lied to you, as did ‘John’. Although you had nothing set in stone with ‘John’, you did have a considerable period of friendship and flirty behaviour, which has in the long run, meant nothing at all to him.No, neither of these people are worth worrying about or keeping in touch with. Cut them loose and find decent friends who will consider your feelings a lot more than these two have.
