Is the demonization of high fructose corn syrup based on real science or on pop psychology?
Q: I keep talking with people who read a best-seller about dieting in which the author said that all the foods we eat that are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup send a chemical message to our brain that says “I am not full yet; I need to eat some more.” The logical/emotional upshot of this supposed chemical message is, of course, “if I am overweight and eat too much, it isn’t my fault.” This is a sermon millions want to hear. It has tremendous popular appeal, as it absolves us of responsibility for bad free will choices we make, while providing us a nice neat scapegoat/villain: the commercial food industry. Yet it is hard to make this point in polite conversation with some poor soul who has been struggling with their weight for two decades and thinks they have finally discovered the real answer why. I just don’t have the heart to challenge their new belief too roughly. –And I don’t have hard facts myself, to support my worst suspicions. So I’m wondering if anyone has any links or facts to support — or logically destroy — the popular assertion that high fructose corn syrup is something other than and worse than just another form of sugar. Can you prove that high fructose corn syrup is any better or any worse than pure cane sugar, beet sugar, maple sugar, etc. Any links you can provide to substantiate your point would be appreciated.Thank you.Google has not replace human intelligence, last time I checked. There are people who may have read entire books who could point me in that specific direction (remember books? –those things full of paper leaves that have letters printed all over them?)
A: High fructose corn syrup is just another form of sugar and all sugars and other carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the body which is used to supply the body with energy.
