Experience European Excellence at the Bavarian Inn and Lodge

The Bavarian Inn and Lodge located in West Virginia is a place where they know how to treat a guest right. Mix that with some authentic Bavarian food and I am hooked.

Location

The historic Inn is located at 164 Shepherdgrade Road in Shepherdstown, West Virginia overlooking the scenic Potomac River. Looking at the building from the outside made me feel as if I was back in Europe.

Rooms

The Bavarian Inn is a very romantic country chalet that offers its’ guests European elegance and authentic Bavarian cuisine. They have 72 rooms that feature gas fireplaces and whirlpool bath tubs. They are decorated with an assortment of antiques and classical style furnishings.

The rooms also have air conditioning, couch/sitting area, refrigerator, big screen TV with cable, iron, DVD player, free wireless internet, coffee maker, and a safe. For an added touch the guests also receive a basket of fresh fruit and bath robes to use while you are in your room.

You have your choice of staying in a Potomac River View Room, Garden View Room, or a suite.

We stated in the Potomac River View room and loved it. The rooms are located in a chalet situated on a bluff, so the views of the River are amazing from the room. We had our own private balcony that was perfect to relax on with a glass of wine as you admired the scenery.

There is an outdoor pool and sun deck that overlooks the Potomac River. It is relaxing and therapeutic to lay out here as the sun sets. Or you can just take a walk around the gorgeous grounds that are filled with flowers and greenery that are well groomed.

If you are looking for something with more activity you can play around on their putting green or play a game of tennis on their outdoor courts. And located a quarter of a mile away from the hotel is the private 18 hole-par 72 golf course Cress Creek Golf Club where only Bavarian Inn guests are allowed to play on.

Dining

The Chef at the Bavarian Inn is Chef Wolfgang. He is a native of Germany and knows what he is doing in the kitchen.

There are 4 dining rooms to choose from The Potomac Room which gives you a great view of the grounds, The Hunt Room which is decorated Bavarian style and complete with stone fireplaces and large chandeliers, The Library which is called their soft seating lounge or for a more casual dining experience you can eat on The Patio or at the Rathskeller which is more of a Pub environment and features live entertainment later at night. It gets crazy fun in the Rathskeller!

My favorite dinner entrée was their Shepherd’s Pie! It was ground lamb with root vegetables and spices topped with whipped potatoes and marinated carrots. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food that they served you. They ranged from $4-$25.

Their gourmet Sunday brunch from 11am-2pm had way too many choices! With items like waffles, eggs benedict, an omelet station, German meatloaf, assorted German sausages, Asian chicken salad, fresh baked breads, salmon capers on boiled eggs and much more. I piled my plate so high on my first trip. I couldn’t help it. Everything looked so good and I had to try a little bit of everything. For $25 a person you are sure to find something that you like.

Then at 1pm they open the Champagne and Bloody Mary bar which you can not miss out on.

Overall

The hotel was very charming and welcoming. The food, I can’t say enough good things about the Bavarian style meals we were served, the service was above and beyond and the price was reasonable. I want to take my family back here with me since our heritage is German. I think it would be the perfect place for a German style family reunion!
