Fiskars 45mm Rotary Cutter Review

In the world of sewing I usually find myself learning something new every day. Whether it is a new fabric I have never worked with or a new sewing technique to enhance the quality of my garment. This time in my journey to conquer the sewing world I have discovered the rotary–the Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter to be exact.

When I first purchased the Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter it was because of the low price tag Wal-Mart had. I was a beginner sewer and I had no clue what its purpose was, but that I would someday need it. The purpose of the rotary cutter is to help cut fabrics for sewing quilts, garments, handbags, and home furnishings. It’s a quicker way to cut in my opinion if you don’t have a steady hand when it comes to cutting with a pair of dressmaker’s sheers.

Before I began using the Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter I needed to learn how to take it apart so I could replace the blades. At first I was nervous because I didn’t know how I was going to replace the blade, but once I read the directions written on the back of the package all I had to do was turn the mini wheel counterclockwise and the blade came out. To secure the blade again I just had to turn the wheel clockwise. It wasn’t as complicated as I thought it was going to be.

The hardest lesson I had to learn when I began using the Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter is that the blade is extremely sharp, and it will cut any surface it is on unless it is used on a cutting mat. I still have a visible line on my living room table where I was using the rotary cutter. Besides the mistake of not using a cutting mat, I like how the sharp blade cuts through any fabric. I used my rotary cutter on delicate fabrics such as silk I purchased from Joann Fabrics and tougher fabrics such as faux leather. I have gotten a clean cut on all the fabrics I have used my rotary cutter on, and not to mention my cutting time has been minimized since using the rotary cutter.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter to anyone who sews. It’s easy to exchange the blades, it’s priced reasonably, and it cuts great. It makes cutting fabric an easy task and it comes in various sizes and different cutting blades. It’s really a must-have tool for any level sewer.
