Flags at Iowa Capitol Building to Mark 9/11 Anniversary

Visitors sat quietly and reflected this weekend on the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines for a display in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks.

On the North lawn of the Capitol Building 2,997 U.S. Flags blew gently in the breeze. Each flag representing one of the 2,997 victims in the 9/11 terror attacks at the World’s Trade Center, The Pentagon and on Flight 93, which crashed in a Pennsylvania field.

The flags were placed by the U.S. Air Force and WHO Radio and line up near East Grand Avenue according to The Chicago Tribune. They will remain through the anniversary on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, people stopped by and took a moment to reflect to view the display. The mood, quiet and somber, filled with reflection.

Some people took photos, some paced around the display of American flags places about one foot apart. Others just stared at the immense display, so many that those flags in the distance ran together creating a sea of blue and drowned out the green grass between them.
