How to Prepare Your Dog for Spring and Summer Time Camping

Before you know it the spring camping season will be here. There are many families who really enjoy camping in the spring time. Pet owners especially love to take their pet along for the fun. Let’s face it pets are considered to be part of the family, right? As a regular camper I know that there are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to camping preparation. The list of priorities does tend to change when you have pet’s however. So I decided to poll some campers who enjoy taking their pets with them on camping trips. Below you will find some ideas, and suggestions on how to get started. When it comes to prepping your dog for the camping season you don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Vet visit a must

The first thing on your list must be a visit to the vet to make sure that your dog is in top health. They will also make sure that all of their vaccinations are up to date. Many campgrounds require proof of recent vaccinations before they allow you to camp with your dog. Let your vet know that you will be taking your dog on a camping trip, they may offer a few helpful suggestions. After your vet visit, make sure that you file away the paper work in a place that you can easily find it later. Your vet will also make sure that you are up to date on your flea and tick treatment.

First aid for dog

We often pack a first aid kit for ourselves when packing for a camping trip, and the same should go for your dog. You can find ready packed first aid kits for dogs at most local pet stores, or online. This is the easiest way to make sure that you have everything that your dog may possibly need.

Microchiping a must

Even if it has never happened before, there is always a possibility that your dog could get lost while you are camping. If you take the time to get your dog microchip-ed it will help when you are searching for your dog. You can ask your vet about this procedure as well.

Get your dog their own bag

When it is time to give your dog food and water, it makes it a lot easier if your dog has it’s own bag. You can place all of the food for your dog in ziplock bags which can easily be stored in your dogs bag. You can also have an extra leash and any other additional supplies you need for your dog.
