I consider myself a kind of connoisseur of protein shakes. Since I had gastric bypass surgery a few years ago, I frequently rely on protein supplements to meet my protein needs. Unfortunately, many protein shakes don’t taste very good. Some protein powders don’t even dissolve very well; many times I’ve found myself trying to drink a glass of lumpy liquid, which is just gross.
Not long ago, I received a sample of Optimum Nutrition Caramel Toffee Fudge protein powder. I’m always looking for new options in protein supplements and I’ve just been in the mood for caramel-flavored things lately. Since it’s winter and it’s cold, I’ve been in the mood for hot drinks, too. Using protein powder in hot drinks can be tricky since protein powder often forms clumps when it’s heated. I decided to give it a try with my sample of Caramel Toffee Fudge protein powder, though.
I used my usual method of preparing hot protein drinks. While I heated about six ounces of water in the microwave, I put the protein powder in a cup with two ounces of soy milk. I whisked the powder and liquid briskly until they formed a smooth paste. The powder seemed to dissolve easily in the soy milk. When my water was hot, but not boiling, I slowly poured the protein paste into the mug of water, stirring all the while. I was pleased to discover no clumps of protein powder!
After tasting my hot protein drink, I decided to add very small amounts of instant coffee (decaf) and Splenda. The finished product was delicious! It was healthy, too. One scoop of Optimum Nutrition Caramel Toffee Fudge protein powder has grams of 24 protein, 130 calories and only one gram of sugar. Adding two ounces of soy milk added a few calories, of course, but also added a little more protein.
I’ve since tried Optimum Nutrition Caramel Toffee Fudge protein powder in cold protein shakes and that’s tasty, too, but I prefer it hot. It’s currently my favorite hot protein drink. I got my sample at vitalady.com, and I encourage you to give it a try.
