The Package

I came home from work and sat right down,
I was weary, a headache was around.
I poured some wine and began to ponder,
And saw something which made me wonder.

A huge gift package under my tree,
What was it and who put it there for me?
Who came in while I was gone,
The doors were locked – the curtains drawn.

Was Santa here before the Eve,
Of Christmas or did someone deceive,
Me into working over-time,
Was this gift really mine?

I kept this gift until Christmas Day,
And opened it so carefully.
It was from a friend who later died,
The gift was wonderful – I cried.
