How do I gain speed and endurance?
Q: I can run a mile in 7 minutes, but that’s only when I do one mile. I can run at a constant speed of 10 minutes per mile if I’m doing more than one. How do I gain enough speed and endurance to make it to a goal of 7’30” minutes per mile as a constant speed for more than one mile. Here are my ideas:Either run 4 miles a day at my 10 minute mile speed or run two 1-mile intervals as fast as I can daily.I’m not sure if either one will work and I’m not sure which one would be better if they were to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.Oh yeah, by “speed” I mean speed in long distances. I run 200 and 400 in track, so I’m fast enough…I just need better speed in the longer events.
A: You have to do distance to build your endurance and you have to do speed work to condition yourself to running fast. If your race is 2 miles then 2 or 3 days a week do something for faster times. Try a day of 4×800 at 3:30 with a one minute rest. A day of 8×400 at 1:45 with 1 minute rests. A day of mile repeats 3×1600 at 7:30 with 5 minute rest. I think you should do your easy 4 miles on the other days and one day a week run longer. Take one day off do not run 7 days a week. When you race start out at your pace, do not run too fast for the first 400 or 800 because then you will run too slow the last part of the race.
