A: At age 14 you should not be lifting wights heavier than your body- weight – Why? Because your still in your growth face and lifting can seriously hurt you. You should wait till you turn 16-18 before lifting seriously as this is the age most males stop growing. If you are a feamle then the same idea applies only you will stop growing sooner.If you want to get in shape and bulk up a little, do it old school without any dumbells. Push ups, pull ups, sit up, longes, jump rope etc where you use your bodyweight! Believe me if you do this regularly you will see great results and you will be ready to start lifting seriously once you turn 16-18.I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear but take it from someone who has seen it up close…
