A: 1. If you are overweight, and you want your abs to show, you MUST do cardio. No way around that. You can do all the ab exercises you want, and have a rock hard six pack, but the layer of fat above them will always prevent them from showing. 2. Do crunches instead of situps. Situps have shown to cause back problems. Plus I personally find crunches more effective. You can do crunches with your upper body hanging off of a couch to get the full range of motion. This is a little complicated sometimes though; depends on the couch. Do cruches intensely about 2-3 times a week.3. Leg lifts. Lay in front of a couch with your body aligned straight. Grasp the underside of the couch. Lift your legs using your abs. Try not to let your lower back come up too high off of the floor. 4. Don’t overtrain, or you won’t get results.5. A: Crunches shouldn’t hurt your lower back, if done properly. Situps are less effective for the abs, than crunches. However, having said that any exercise you do to focus on your abs is likely going to require some use of your back muscles. You can look up ab exercises online, there are some that can be done standing as well, and perhaps find some things you can do without extreme discomfort. Unless you suffer from a back injury or chronic “bad back” you should consider also doing exercises to strengthen your back muscles. Overusing those muscles is why we need strong abs as well…so your abs can help support your back.For the chest, look up chest exercises as well. There are exercises you can do with dumbbells to work your pectoral muscles, and push-ups also work that area. Since you have back issues, do them on your knees instead of your toes.
