Q: i want to start running to lose weight.im very unactive and i want to change that, ok well say im starting at not running for like the last 2 years, how should i start building endurance to be able to run? if i start out at running for 2 minutes ( yes thats how out of shape i am) everyday, how much should i be increasing the time daily and weekly?
A: If you have been running for two years now, i reckon you can run for 5 minutes non stop. Make sure you run at a pace which doesn’t change throughout the run. Then, next time you go out for a run, go for 10 minutes and built it up everytime until you have got to 60 minutes, and there’s your endurance. (If you have difficulty, go for swims in your nearest swimming pool and do lots of lengths and this may help build up your endurance also) Start by running twice a week, then after about 4 weeks, add one more day then the next week 4 days. (Brisk walks can count as one as long as they are long walks!) Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Mon Rest Rest Rest Rest Hill work Fartlek Tues Slow jog Jog Jog Jog Jog JogWed Rest Rest Rest Rest Rest RestThur Brisk Walk Run Run Run Run RunFri Rest Walk Walk Walk Walk WalkSat Swim Swim Swim Swim Swim SwimSun Rest Rest Rest Rest Rest RestThe key though is to gradually increase the amount you do, so make sure you give your body enough time to recover, are eating a healthy diet, taking on plenty of water so you aren’t dehydrated and most of all that you have decent running shoes (asics are best) because without proper running shoes and especially if you’re running on concrete you’re asking for an injury. Other training you can do is:Interval speed workHill work& FartlekGood luck

Q: I already do one long run per week and two shorter runs but want to add something of higher intensity to increase cardio endurance. Some people say interval training is best, some people say sprints are better. I was thinking 10x 1 minute sprints with 2 minutes recovery?
A: I think you may be using the wrong terms regarding endurance. You gain endurance by doing aerobic exercise for periods longer than 20 minutes. What you are seeking is stress or speed endurance which you can gain by doing intervals, fartlek runs, or what is called time intervals which is what you have in mind with the 10×1 minute runs.Running 3 days each week is not really enough to improve your endurance, that may work to maintain your conditioning but is not going to help increase your endurance. If you run easy 3 days and add another day of time intervals you can improve. You should do the 10×1 minute, within a 3 to 5 mile run, run 1 mile to warm up, then do the intervals, then cool down for the rest of the run.You will want to mix up your intervals, doing as much as 10×3 minutes. You should also change up the recovery times, if you are running for 1 minute you may not need 2 minutes jog to recover, normally I try to have the same recovery time as the interval time.
