Looking for advice to relieve severe sore throat symptoms caused by flu?
Q: About two and a half weeks ago I came down with the flu, I suffered with it for about 10 days before I felt completely better. I was bed ridden most of the time sleeping about 12 hours a day or more, in some cases with severe congestion, aches, slight muscle weakness, mild sore throat, and occasional dizziness/nausea.After about 4 days of feeling healthy, I began to felt feverish, and achy (fever not being a symptom I recall of my first flu). I use contacts normally but did not use them the next day (had also not used them during the first flu) after another day of rest I was feeling somewhat better and used my contacts, which caused me to suffer mild pink eye that night. I took them out again and the pink eye has been mild, but my other symptoms have grown worse, I began to develop a sever soar throat, which has caused me to eat and drink little due to the sever pain of swallowing, my fever also comes and goes and am suffering from fever and chills on and off.Today I woke up feeling like I had something growing on the back of my throat near wear the nasal passage meets the throat, clearing my throat I was also coughing up blood with the mucus, looking in a mirror my throat also looks red and a bit swollen in the painful area. Is this the flu or something more sever like bronchitis? And is it something I need medical treatment for? The blood has gone away when I clear my throat since this morning though the pain and redness has now.
A: Sounds like you could have strep throat, which is treatable with antibiotics. Do you have any white pustules (spots at the back of your throat)? Is it very painful to swallow? Is your fever in the 102 range? I would go see a doctor or minute clinic. Bronchitis is mostly in your lungs, not throat. And change the contacts – if they are infected, you’ll get sick every time you wear them.
Do I have the regular flu or a stomach flu? Symptoms: NO Sore throat, NO fever, Vomiting for 2 days, Headache?
Q: On Sunday I got home extremely tired. I came home from work and went immediately to bed and slept from midnight to almost 1 PM. This was the latest I have slept in a long time, and my schedule hasn’t changed. I woke up and felt nausea. That day, on Monday, I felt dizzy all day and threw up. I also had a severe headache and nothing would get rid of it. I was hungry, too, but with the need to throw up. I felt weak and napped for a few hours, and when I woke up I felt fine until I went back to sleep.I had a hard time sleeping but once I woke up, I felt refreshed. I went to class and two hours later, felt like crap again. I ate lunch anyways and kept myself hydrated with a Sobe. Now, I started to get a major headache and felt the vomiting sensation. I threw up twice but still felt dizzy. I drove home and felt like throwing up for hours. What do I have?? I am SO dizzy like car sick but 20 times worse. No fever, no sore throat, no stomach ache but lots of gas, no body pains, no coughing and no sneezing.
A: It sounds (to me) like you have an intestinal virus… You need to try to keep your diet very blan by staying away from greasy, spicy foods, try to stay away from dairy, and anything high in fiber at least for the next 72 hours. Try not to take anything for nausea, vomiting or diarrhea as that will only hold the virus IN your system and you want to eliminate it. Be sure that you are drinking lots of water and/or fluids higher in sodium (which help you retain fluids) like Gatorade, Sprite, Ginger Ale, even Coke…try to stay away from fruit juices as the acid in them might make your stomach/intestines more irritated. If you are not running a fever and do not have any severe pain, then I would have to bet you’re most definitely dealing with an intestinal virus… I hope you feel better soon! :0)
How long after exposure to swine flu do symptoms take to generate?
Q: Over spring break (April 4-April 9) I went to New York City. Cases of the swine flu are now being recognized in the city and I am experiencing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. I’m scared I’ve been exposed. How long after exposure to swine flu do symptoms take to generate? My symptoms include sore throat, nasal congestion, fever, and very mild coughing. I don’t however have nausea or diarrhea, which is also stated as a symptom. Help! I’m scared. I live in Atlanta and I don’t want to be the one who brings swine flu to Georgia.
A: 1-5 days. Don’t worry, you probably just have a cold. If you had swine flu, you would have felt sick sooner.
