Should I take my dog to the vet at this point?
Q: my dog had a shedding issue for the past few weeks. He’s on taste of the wild, so no grain food. He’s a shiba inu mix but has short hair. It’s winter and I’ve read that inside heat and outside cold can contribute to this. However, I furminated him 2 weeks ago and got all of his fluffy undercoat out, where there was only top coat left, and i could pull on his hair without it coming out….2 days later his top coat was coming out in CHUNKS. So I brushed and plucked his top coat until no more was coming (he has NO bald spots or anything). But then a day later, it has started again…I’ve had dogs before, one being an aussie mixed with lab and she NEVER shed like this. I just adopted him in November so I don’t know if this is normal for him. He’s on frontline plus with no fleas/ticks/lice…I’ve held off taking him to the vet simply because he’s healthy happy and active and i didn’t want to go for $50 consultation just to be told “he’s shedding because of winter” or something along those lines.I’ve tried the oatmeal/tea tree shampoos and he’s on a grain free food, but nothing’s working, and as frequently and as much (even after i’ve fully brushed him top and undercoat) hair that i can pull off him is starting to worry me. I’m starting to think this could be an endocrine problem…..Is it time for a vet appointment at this point? If this was going on with your dog would you take him? Should I wait to see if it gets better again? Advice appreciated, thanks:)
A: As long as their isn’t any bald spots then I wouldn’t worry about it yet. Try giving him omega fatty acid vitamin supplements or washing him in shampoo especially for shedding. Omega 3 fatty acids keep coats and skin healthy which significantly reduces shedding. I’d wait it out a little longer. It doesn’t sound like anything life threatening. If it comes time that you have to take him to the vet call around and ask for prices first. There is a vets by my house that only charges 27 dollars for a consultation. Good Luck.
Could being outside in the rain all day contribute to my dog being sick?
Q: My dog spent most of Saturday lying outside in the rain (he had shelter but chose not to use it) Today he is a bit lethargic, not too fussed on his food and has a fever. He is not bad to the stage I would take him to vet, as he can still run around, bark and play with his toys (Obviously if he deteriorates I will take him to one) I know that you cant catch a cold from being out when its chilly, but just wondering whether I should keep him inside when it rains as well?He was near several other dogs over the weekend, but he is fully vaccinated (boosters due next month) so I wouldnt think he could have caught somethingHe is a Kelpie/Cattle dog and has a double coat – we had no towels to dry him off with as we were on hols, so I took him into the tent where it was dry. We took him to the sheltered area near the house we stayed near so he would know it was there but he chose not to use it. Even at home with our big verandah I’ll come home from work and he is dripping wet from running around in the rain.I noticed he felt warmer this morning. Im trying to keep him cooler just by feeding him ice, our vet (who is closed til Tues) doesnt give out medication to lower temperature unless necessary.
A: You never said what kind of dog you had. Some dogs are 100% ok out in the rain if they are healthy and have a coat for it. Some dogs don’t have a good waterproofing coat, and therefore can’t stay out in the rain. Our dogs are usually sitting out in the rain, or snow, because they love it and stay quite warm. When did he start having a temp? The rain may have cooled him off. If he gets a fever for more than a day or two, bring him into the vet- there can be a lot of things that make him lethargic and feverish, but not show any major symptoms. Sometimes, by the time you see the major symptoms, they are really bad, and it will cost you more in the long run. Question on your shelter- have you seen him go in it often? Ours would not use an insulated or closed in shelter- it got too hot inside, and we had to switch to a more open, airy one so they would use it.
Global warming deniers: Can you provide a single reputable source that backs up your position?
Q: I realize that the earth has been going through periods of heating and cooling long before man started changing the composition of the atmosphere. That is not what I mean when I say “global warming”. I am referring to anthropogenic global warming (hereinafter referred to as AGW); that is, warming that would not have occurred naturally without the effects of man’s activities. So; it’s a great, big internet out there. Here’s your challenge: find one, single source from any accredited university with an enrollment of 5,000 full-time students or more, or any agency of any government in the world, that says that man is not contributing to global warming. Not acceptable: Blogs, news stories, non-governmental agencies, or individuals, even if they say they invented climatology. If AGW is indeed a hoax, surely you can find one shred of evidence from one of the reputable sources I’ve listed. Unless, of course, you believe that every such university and every government agency in the world is part of a conspiracy to deceive the world. And please, no anecdotal evidence, such as “it’s really cold outside where I am”, and no conjecturing.Cold, hard evidence from one of the named sources only, please.Good luck; you’re going to need it.Johnny Sokko, please re-read the question. Anecdotal evidence is not science.Satcomgrunt, I am asking the deniers to back up their claims, which is their responsibility.DNA Fairy:From your article:”Here’s the kind of information the “scientific consensus” types don’t want you to read. MIT’s Alfred P. Sloan professor of meteorology Richard Lindzen recently complained about the “shrill alarmism” of Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth.” Lindzen acknowledges that global warming is real, and he acknowledges that increased carbon emissions might be causing the warming — but they also might not”.Not quite the “smoking gun” I’m looking for, and I don’t believe that Mr. Lindzen speaks for his entire department.Advancing: Look into the qualifications of the signators of that petition. The vast majority of them have no credentials in climatology, and they do not represent a majority of the world’s scientists. And you haven’t met the criteria of my question. The Republican: “Why provide links … “Because I asked you nicely to?Aural marginalized:”Czech President Vaclav Klaus took aim at climate change campaigner Al Gore on Saturday in Davos in a frontal attack on the science of global warming.”I don’t think that there is any global warming,” said the 67-year-old liberal, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. “I don’t see the statistical data for that.”And Mr. Klaus’ qualifications as a climatologist are ….. ?LD: “How about just the fact that it is natural……. “Did I not stipulate that at the beginning of my question? Please try to differentiate between natural trends and temperature increases that are almost certainly caused by man’s activities. I beg you.CrlCkEe: “I FEEL HOT”Now we’re getting somewhere.A Republicrat:”Now I’m no expert on global warming, regarding the specifics and all the jargon and what not …. “With all due respect – no, you are not.LD: “FACT: a single volcanic eruption can produce as much CO2 as everyone in America driving their car 75+ miles everyday for 3 years……. “Fact: that is a drop in the bucket, especially considering all of the greenhouse gases that man’s activities are putting into the atmosphere: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons.Methane comes mostly from catlle, you might say? They wouldn’t all be here if we didn’t find them delicious.xx: “Have you ever been to Yosemite?”No, but I doubt that gazing upon the craggy face of El Capitan, or marvelling at the geological forces that conspired to create Half Dome would undo all of the science that indicates that man is contributing to accelerated global warming. I’d like to go though.Call Me Bwana: “Where is the data supporting global warming?”I refer you to the scientific community.Advancing: “UNLIKE YOU I HAVE INVEST[IGAT?]ED THEIR QUALIFICATIONS. Your question has been asked and answered. If you wish to continue wearing the koolaid glass’s that is up to you. But any idiot can see there was NEVER scientific consensus”.I have investigated their credentials, and found them wanting. Anyone with a Bachelor’s degree in a wide range of scientific fields, most of which have nothing to do with climatology? And science is not about who can get the most names on a petition. I am very familiar with the Scientific Method, and that is not part of it. And I never claimed that every scientist in the world is in agreement. My contention was, and still is, that there is not a single department of a major university, or agency of any government in the world, whose collective opinion is that anthropogenic global warming is not real. My challenge has not been met.Republicrat: I didn’t bother with the rest of your little tale of tinkering because it A) doesn’t add up to squat and B) does not meet the criteria of my question. Is that supposed episode alone enough to make you discredit all of the evidence for man’s involvement in global warming? Really?jdsgop – I am not bifurcating anything. I never mentioned Al Gore, and did not restrict the discussion to CO2. The question is very clear actually.Hi Michealla – Don’t worry, I wouldn’t “blast” one of my contacts, and I hope that I haven’t “blasted” anyone. I just like cold, hard facts, and have little regard for unscientific thoughts and methods. But I do agree with you that if someone thinks he knows better than the collective view (no, not 100% consensus) of the applicable scientific community, then they might well deserve to be compared to “a monkey who has been hit on the head with one too manycoconuts !”
A: I personally believe that global warming is a tactic to take the focus off of God in this country. We aren’t getting destroyed by the temperature changing God is going to destroy this earth not man. I think that yes we have some influence on the climate , just like we are polluting this earth , we are to be stewards of the earth and we are doing a crappy job (yes i realize this is conjecture) My question is why does it matter? is it our nature to just fear things like global warming because it sounds scary??? well i know even with all the crap us humans destroy we aren’t capable of destroying the earth completely so i have my trust somewhere else! Must suck to be worried about things that you have no control over all the time..
