Tincture of iodine which is iodine in a liquid (usually ethanol) will disinfect wounds, the element iodine is a solid at room temperature and is also pretty dangerous to put into an open wound since 2-3 grams of the stuff will kill you.

Q: I have a 10 wk old puppy who is very playful when i took him out to potty today he was running and ran into our shed which happend to have a sharp edge on it, it cute his skin on his “snout” i dont know if thats what its called on a dog but not on his nose between his eyes and nose, and it peeled up his skin its about an inch wide but has stopped bleeding, what can i do at home for him as all of the vets are closed in my area and the nearest animal hospital thats opened is 2 hours from me, he isnt crying nor is he bleeding anymore just the skin is peeled up and it looks gross, what do i do for him i have already put peroxide on it and then iodine is there anything else i should do? He also doesnt seem to be bothered by it!

A: The snout is called the muzzle.Keep it clean and don’t let him mess with it. Get him to the vet tomorrow or drive him over tonight because he will probably need antibiotics and its highly likely it will get infected.

A: It is hard to bandage a puppy. I would cleanse the area with bacterial soap and wash with warm water. Peroxide and even Iodine should be avoided. Peroxide is NO longer suggested for wound care as it debrides (removes) healing tissue and Iodine could be fatal if the puppy licks the area. Iodine level for an adult person and one of a puppy is much different, as also Iodine is not always a good agent for cuts and lacerations. As suggested see a vet when possible. chances are they will not be able to suture (sew) the nose but antibiotic therapy may be needed. Good luck

What is the name of the farrier who has been trimming/shoeing the horse?2. What is the name of the vet(s) who have seen the horse?Once you know the answer to these two questions, you can contact the farrier and the vet and see what kind of issues the horse may have had.
