- Could a wet basement be the reason we had the flu for more than 3 days?
- Q: My boyfriends youngest son 2years old showed symptoms of the flu when he got diahrea last week and than his 8 year old son got the same symptoms along with upset stomach and unable to keep food in his system. About 4 days ago my boyfriend caught this same virus and it lasted about 4 days. and i just caught it and i had diareah, vommiting, nausea, and dehydration and fever of 100.4 caused from not being able to keep the fluids in. this is the first day i am actually able to get out of bed, i went in the basement to load the laundry and the rug in front of the washer smelled awful. some water had seeped in the basement a few days ago and a few weeks before that soaking the rug. Im thinking this is what started this nasty virus. What do you think? How should I disinfect the area and house to keep the virus from circulating again?
- A: actually, I don’t think that that’s the flu. That sounds more like an allergic reaction to mold that could be growing in a wet basement. Wetness in the living area is the most common cause of mold, especially if there is drywall nearby.(mold eats paper)If it is the flu, it was not caused by the wet basement. You should call somebody to see if there is a mold problem. If there isn’t, and it was the flu, then the best way to disinfect would be to take Clorox or Lysol wipes as well as bleach and disinfectant (like the kind you can use in the refrigerator or near food as you have a two year old) and go through all plastic and glass surfaces is the house. Mold should be gotten rid of by a professional then maintained by mold killing cleanser such as Lysol products….New toothbrushes are probably a good idea either way since there was vomitting.
