Sudden Adult Death Syndrome?
Q: My mother was recently diagnosed with this condition. Tests she underwent for other things just happened to show this up. She was told it’s VERY rare for anyone to be diagnosed with this, alive. It’s not usually known until an autopsy is performed. The consultant has requested that all her siblings, her children, and grandchildren be tested as it’s believed to be genetic. So far, my mothers siblings have all been tested and are ok. My siblings and I are due for our test in 2 weeks time.My question is, if any of us are diagnosed with this, what are the implications on our everyday lives? And more so, what are the implications for our children? We are all relatively young, at 25 I’m the youngest in my family, my eldest sister being 37.Thanks for any information anyone can offer
A: it occurs within 1 hour of the onset of symptoms. it account for 80-90% of all sudden non traumatic deaths, among patients with aborted scd ischemic heart disease is the most common associated cardiac structural abnormality most survivers do not evolve evidence of previous infarcts; however more than 75% hav evidence of previous infarcts in the absence of an mi, an underlying pathophysiologic cause should always be corrected if possible(eg; aortic valve replacement in critical aortic stenosis, revascularisation of critical multivessal coronary artery diseases. so please go for a cardiac opinion.
