Heart meds: are they safe? I’m on verapamil for fluttering.?
Q: I was given verapamil a calcium calcium channel blocker and I was told was a better alternative to a beta blocker since that would also affect the lungs, but it’s giving me a side effect of being really tired and spent, and just way too calm….and I’m not sure how to get rid of this side effect. Are these meds safe and more importantly, WILL they help with heart problems such as flutters…or is that really not guaranteed?I apparently have no underlying heart disease or anything else wrong with me aside from heart fluttering DAILY for no apparent reason they can’t find…so now they put me on this…I just feel really different on this med than usually. I don’t feel impulsive anymore or on-the-go or whatever. I just feel tired, calm…like i just took a sleeping pill. Are these meds to be taken reguarly, like daily or every other day at the same time for a long time, or only during emergencies…or….what?thanks.
A: when u say flutter, im assuming u mean atrial flutter.verapamil works by slowing down electrical conduction through av node to provide for better ventricular filling.some people have asymptomatic a. flutter in which case notreatment needed.if symptomatic, they can get rid of it either pharmacologically or by cardioverting u.over 85% of people who r cardioverted result in normal sinus rhythm.basically, ur heart has 4 chambers: 2 atrium and 2 ventricles.the 2 atriums beat in sync, then 2 ventricles beat in sync.in a. flutter, the atrium beats eradically so the ventricle doesnt have enough time to fill up properly with blood.the goal is to slow down the atrial rate and get it to beat at normal pace.other drugs that the doctor could have used are esmolol (beta blocker) and digoxin and adenosine.ur doctor should also have put u on anticoagulant such as coumadin, especially if they plan to cardiovert u.there r no extra pathways to ablate.thats wolf-parkinson white syndrome, a totally different heart condition than yours.
How do I stop feeling disconnected from my body?
Q: A little background. I usually get horrible cramps and headaches at the start of my period and last night/yesterday, that’s exactly what happened. I took 2 mg of dilauded around 4pm yesterday and laid down for a nap. an hour later, I was still in pain so I took another 2 mg of dilauded. Around 9pm I woke up again and took my regular pills (40 mg of Prozac and 180 mg of Verapamil) and since the headache was still there, I took 1 fioricet and 50 mg of benedryl.Last night around midnight my boyfriend texted me and woke me up and I noticed that I felt disconnected from my body. Its like…. I touch myself or scratch myself and I can’t feel anything. It is a very weird feeling, like I’m dreaming. So I went back to sleep and woke up this morning around 6 to study for an exam I have at noon, but the disconnected feeling is still here. How can I make it go away so I can feel safe driving to school? And what causes this feeling?
A: It was likely all the meds you took in a relatively short period of time.Give it some time. Drink plenty of water. Skip classes today if possible so you can rest. The feeling should pass. Hang in there,~Dr. B.~
I’m worried about a new prescription…?
Q: For the past 2 months i have felt very sick. Whenever I stand up, i become very dizzy and weak. When this happens, i get a headache, become out of breath, and my heart races. I also can not fall asleep. So… I went to the doctor. They checked my blood pressure, and it was low, and dropped even more when i went from a sitting position to standing. My doc took my blood and i wore a heart monitor for 24 hours. My blood work came out normal, as well as the heart monitor. For 2 weeks, i took Trazodone 50MG- to help with the headaches and sleep apnea. It did not help. Today i was prescribed, verapamil ER 100MG. When i look it up, it appears to be for high blood pressure, and headaches. I understand that i would get this med for the headaches, but since my blood pressure is so low, isn’t it a bad idea to take high blood pressure pills?I’m not a doctor by any means, I’m just concerned. Please let me know if this was a BIG mistake on my doctors part. And what I should do to help me feel better! Thank you!Note: I’m a16 year old female. Very healthy.
A: This is a perfect question for a pharmacist. They are so smart and helpful. They know more about medications than most doctors. Your doctor might have had a good reason to put you on this med. I don’t know.A pharmacist WILL know, and will be able to answer all of your questions. If you need a 24-hour pharmacist, look up “Pharmacies” in the Yellow Pages.Good luck!
