Treatment has improved so much over the years that the life expectancy of a diabetic can be as long as someone with diabetes. The problem is the treatment is primarily up to the individual. It’s obesity that is the biggest killer, not necessarily diabetes…but in type 2 diabetes, many are over weight. In fact, a study showed that obesity took an average of 8 years from obese patients, with a life expectancy of 70 years instead of 78. there was a time when things were more grim for type 1 diabetics but now the technology and insulin improvements have made glucose control much better. Genetics play a role here. Like the smoker who smokes all their lives and dies at 90 versus someone who never smoked and dies of lung cancer at 35. However MOST of the time if a diabetic, no matter what type, commits to a lifestyle of eating healthy, exercising and maintaining their ideal weight while keeping tight control over their glucose levels, more than likely they’ll live a fairly long life. Younger diabetics will have even longer life expectancy than those who were diagnosed even 20 years ago, just because of the advances in medicine. As long as there’s commitment to taking care of ourselves, there’s no reason we can’t live long and relatively healthy lives.
