Could be many things. Hormones for one whether you’re 16 or 46. Stress, diet, hygiene, etc.
If you’re almost a teen, chances are pretty good that you have some acne. Almost eight in 10 teens have acne along with lots of adults. However, adults in their 20’s, even into their 40’s or older, can get acne. Acne often clears up after several years even without treatment, but you need not wait to outgrow it. Untreated acne can leave scars, which can be treated by your dermatologist.Acne is a condition of the skin that shows up as different types of bumps. These can be whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts. The type of acne that a lot of teens get is called “acne vulgaris.” It usually shows up on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back, and chest.Male hormones found in both males and females rise during puberty, stimulate and enlarge the oil glands of the skin called “sebaceous” . These glands make sebum which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin . These glands are found in areas where acne is common (i.e. face, upper back, and chest). The sebum which reaches the skin surface by emptying through the skin surface opening of the follicle. The hair follicle opening is sometimes called the pore. The sebum causes the cells from the follicular lining to shed more rapidly and stick together, forming a plug at the hair follicle opening. Bacteria grow in the mixture of oil and cells in the follicle. These bacteria make chemicals that stimulate inflammation and cause the wall of the follicle to break. The sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells spill into the skin causing redness, swelling, and pus – and cause acne.
