Both Chlorpheniramine and Diphenhydramine are from the first class of antihistamines….both good for allergies and both drowsy (Diphendydramine may be slightly more drowsy compared to the other). Go for second generation antihistamines which cause much less drowsiness. They are equally effective and usually long acting so you only need to take at most twice a day. These include Cetrizine (Zyrtec) and Loratidine (Clarityne) and can be purchased from the pharmacist.
Chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine, relieves red, itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose caused by allergies, hay fever, and the common cold. It may also relieve the itching of insect bites, bee stings, poison ivy, and poison oak.Diphenhydramine hydrochloride, trade name BenadrylAntihistamines are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of hay fever and other types of allergy. They work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body. Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult…….. * Oral Azatadine o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Brompheniramine o Capsules (U.S.) o Elixir (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (Canada) * Cetirizine o Syrup (U.S.) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Chlorpheniramine o Extended-release capsules (U.S.) o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) o Chewable tablets (U.S.) o Extended-release tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Clemastine o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Cyproheptadine o Syrup (Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Desloratadine o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Dexchlorpheniramine o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) o Extended-release tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Dimenhydrinate o Extended-release capsules (Canada) o Oral Solution (U.S. and Canada) o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) o Chewable tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Diphenhydramine o Capsules (U.S. and Canada) o Elixir (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S.) * Doxylamine o Tablets (U.S.) * Fexofenadine o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) o Capsules (U.S. ) * Hydroxyzine o Capsules (U.S. and Canada) o Oral suspension (U.S.) o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S.) * Loratadine o Syrup (U.S. and Canada) o Tablets (U.S. and Canada) * Phenindamine o Tablets (U.S.) * Parenteral Brompheniramine o Injection (U.S.) * Chlorpheniramine o Injection (U.S. and Canada) * Dimenhydrinate o Injection (U.S. and Canada) * Diphenhydramine o Injection (U.S. and Canada) * Hydroxyzine o Injection (U.S. and Canada) * Rectal Dimenhydrinate o Suppositories (Canada)
Well, for one thing both are antihistamines. ALL antihistamines have the side effect of drowsiness. Diphenhydramine, is used in products such as bendryl, and in night time sleep aids. Chlorpheneramine is used in some medications that help to clear up a cough, or to help you breathe better when you are stuffed up and is usually only found in prescription medicines. As I haven’t worked in a pharmacy for about 4 years now, some newer medications may contain it now. Unfortunately, any antihistamine will have that sleepiness side affect. Ask your doctor to prescribe you something else with either less of a dosage of antihistamine, or something else altogether. Just be sure that he knows all over the counter medications and prescription medicines that you are currently taking so that he won’t prescribe something that will react with anything else you are taking. Good Question and best of luck to you and yours.- James
