C-diff is a bacteria present in the colon and the infection is brought on by an antibiotic. Yep.The treatment is ANOTHER type antibiotic. Here’s more info: http://www.cdiffsupport.com/aboutcdiff.h.
Clostridium difficile is a bacteria that is normally present, along with other bacteria, in the intestine. It is also normal that these bacteria are in balance and hold each other in check. When a person has had potent antibiotic therapy, the balance of intestinal bacteria can be thrown off with other bacteria killed off and C. diff (note spelling of abbreviation) proliferating abnormally and colonizing. If impaction has been ruled out, chronic and frequent runny/watery stools are a red flag as well as a recent history of antibiotics. A stool culture to test for C. diff toxins A & B is done. Don’t confuse diarrhea at the same time as antibiotic use with C. diff. Diarrhea is a common adverse effect of antibiotics. This watery stool occurs after days antibiotics are completed. C. diff is far more likely to occur in a hospital or long-term care setting where antibiotics are routinely used than in an outpatient setting. It’s usually treated with Flagyl (metronizadole) or Vancocin (vancomycin) and the patient is placed in contact isolation until he/she has had no more runny stools.
