A Guide to Celebrate Women’s History Month! Here’s a List of Events Happening in the NJ/NY Area!

Women’s History Month is celebrated every year for the whole month of March. If you are one of the many who like to get out, attend events to celebrate women’s heritage, and you live in the NY/NJ area; I have a list of some of the events that just might be around your area for you to check out.

A couple of New Jersey’s biggest universities are taking recognition of Women’s History Month and are throwing their own events.

Rutgers Newark will be hosting an International Film Festival highlighting Women’s History Month. Their program is called “FootPrints in the City“. The event is free and open to the public. It will be held from March 1 – 3, 2012 at the Paul Robeson Student Center at Rutgers. Check out their website for more details.

Princeton opened an exhibit in recognition of the women of Princeton called “She Flourishes.” The exhibit is being shown in the Mudd Library free of charge and opens to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and will remain open until August 31st, 2012.

Be sure to check your neighboring college or university to see what events they might be having as well.

Girl Talk – If any of you are interested in poetry and happen to be near West Caldwell, NJ, there will be a poetry reading in celebration of Women’s History Month. More than two dozen women poets will read poems related to the lives of women. A reception will also follow the reading and books will be available for purchase and signing. This event called “Girl Talk: A Poetry Reading in Celebration of Women’s History Month” will take place on Saturday March 24, 2012 at the West Caldwell Public Library in West Caldwell, NJ. This event is also free and open to the public.

Salute to Women – Over in NY the Intrepid Museum will be hosting events all month long in honor of WHM. Here’s a breakdown of the events you will be able to catch at the museum which is located at south street seaport on Pier 86.

March 1 – June 8, 2012 – There will be an exhibit for the Women in Aviation: World War II

March 3 & 4 – Science & Engineering Weekend which will be full of educators and partners of Intrepid so you can experience hands-on learning about science and engineering.

March 11 – Health & Sports Day – a day to get you moving and thinking about a healthy lifestyle.

March 24 – Meet the Pilots Day. This event will begin at 11 a.m. with a discussion in the theater followed by a meet and greet in the afternoon of some amazing female aviators featuring Bee Haydu (a WWII Women’s Air Force Service Pilot), Leslie Watkins (a commercial A320 pilot and JetBlue Airways flight instructor), Admiral Wendi Carpenter (US Navy (retired) and President of SUNY Maritime), and Colonel Kimberly Carpenter (US Air Force, Vice Commander, US Air Force Expeditionary Center, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ)

Girls Scout Day will also be taking place on the same day on March 24th. It will be an aviation themed Girl Scout day where girl scouts will be participating in a number of activities that will help them learn about careers in aviation as well as how aircraft fly.

March 3 & 31 – Operation Slumber – Girls Only! This event invites youth groups and their families to learn firsthand what it’s like to sleep on an aircraft carrier! They will also explore the hangar deck and an interactive hall, search for treasure, tour the flight deck by flashlight, watch a movie, hear tales, and ride on the XD Theater and more!

Join me on the Bridge Brooklyn – March 8th is International Women’s Day and many women and even men will be gathering at 12:00 noon at Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall Park in Manhattan for a celebration and show of solidarity. This event is from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. You must register for this event. Online registration is closed, but you can still register at the place between 11:45 a.m. – 12:00 noon.

These are just some of the local events out of many that will be going on during March. Be sure to search what might be going on in your area. Be proud to be a woman or to have a woman in your life for women are empowering!
