Do you think cornices are outdated and passe? You could be right. But, not if you use them correctly. From tailored materials to wood-built cornices, you can still adorn your home with a unit that fits right in. Let me show you how.
• Ornate
Large, ornate cornices can be a little over-the-top. But, they can also be a stunning addition to a traditionally decorating room. When turned-wood furniture and a lot of scroll work are present in the room, a large, custom cornices with scroll work and colors that complement the furnishings are actually the perfect window treatment in the space. Install a large, ornate cornice over a set of windows and let coordinating fabric flow from behind the unit. There’s no better way to bring drama to your traditional decor project.
• Tailored
Neatly tailored, tufted or trimmed material cornices are still right in style. Just select materials that blend into the space and a tailored cornice will carry the theme to your windows. However, with tailored and padded material cornices, be careful to keep the scale in proportion to the selected space so unit doesn’t overpower the room.
• Contemporary
Contemporary cornices are creative ways to top a window with materials and designs that are sleek and simple, yet very elegant. Leather and metal lend themselves quite nicely to modern room plans. Straight lines and one-color cornices aren’t too fussy and can top a set of blinds or cellular shades in perfect harmony with a no-nonsense contemporary design.
• Wood
Creating wood cornices with decorative mouldings are a wonderful way to further embellish the architecture in a room without taking away from the rest of the furnishings. Match the wood to the finish of the window frames and they will look like they just belong there.
• Combined with Valances
Don’t just stop at adding a cornice to the top of your window. For a really special effect, combine a stationary cornice with a fabric valance and you will have a combination that commands attention. You won’t even need additional curtains or blinds – unless you want them for privacy.
