September is just around the corner, and many parents are gearing up for back to school shopping. Parents in the Philadelphia area are no different. In preparation for the school year ahead, parents will be scouting out local retailers in an attempt to get the best deal on school supplies. Upon review, there are several retailers that are offering exceptional discounts on everything a young students needs to excel in school. Here are three retailers that are pricing back to school merchandise at unbeatable prices.


Many parents find the superstore Target to be their one-stop shop for back to school shopping. The Philadelphia area is home to four Target locations in various sections of the city. A few of Target’s impressive sales include Mead 1-subject spiral notebooks for $2, 8 pack of Crayola Washable Markers for $1.50 and Avery 1 inch durable 3-ring binders for $2. Target also has a wide variety of college dorm necessities at reasonable prices as well. The listed prices are good until August 20, 2011, and Target is not allowing rain checks on back to school items.

Target maintains four locations in Philadelphia with stores located at 1 Mifflin Street in South Philadelphia, 4000 Monument Road on the Main Line, 2701 Castor Avenue in Bridesburg and 2450 Shoppers Lane in the Cheltenham area of the city. The Target locations in South Philadelphia, Bridesburg and on the Main Line maintain hours Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.


Another retailer that is offering some impressive deals on school supplies is the office supply giant Staples. Some of the substantial bargains include Avery 3-ring dividers for 50 cents, Hammermill printer paper for 50 cents, and 25-50% of all back packs. The prices listed are valid until August 20, 2011.

Philadelphia is home to seven Staples locations that are spread across the all areas of the city. Locations include 1500 Chestnut Street, 1044 Market Street, 1300 South Columbus Boulevard, 2290 Oregon Avenue inside Quartermaster Plaza, Roosevelt Boulevard at Adams Avenue, 8500 Henry Avenue in the Andorra Shopping Center and 9906 E. Roosevelt Boulevard. All Philadelphia Staples stores are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Office Max

Office Max is giving competitors a run for their money in terms of low prices on school supplies. Some of the amazing deals include 1 cent portfolios (limit of 5 per customer), 5 cent protractors (limit of 3 per customer,) Schoolio 1 inch 3-ring binders (limit of 3 per customer) for 50 cents and more. Office Max’s current sale will end on August 20, 2011.

Philadelphia has just two Office Max locations; 7231 Roosevelt Boulevard and 9755 Roosevelt Boulevard, both in Northeast Philadelphia. Both Office Max locations are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
