Book Review: Lumbee Indian Girl: Battered, but Not Shattered

Jeremiah 29:11
11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Lumbee Indian Girl: Battered, but Not Shattered shouts with a GOD-given ferocity that GOD can use even the most messed up people and situations to not only bring HIM all of the glory, but to use their story to inspire other people to want to be rid of all the enemy’s fleshly laced shame and to want to step up to give GOD the glory as well. Author and phenomenal woman of GOD, Loretta Hunt Freeman, presents her life story in a beautifully powerful, but congenial manner, using a language that lacks unnecessary pretentiousness that so many books fall victim to. She was once an ordinary Lumbee Indian girl who was forced to carry an extraordinary generational curse that, unfortunately, is all too common to many members of the body of CHRIST. In this exceptional autobiography, Freeman takes the reader on a journey exploring the harsh reality that when it comes to rape, incest, addiction, alcoholism and mental torture, age doesn’t matter. It is while on this all-too-common journey that the reader discovers, along with Freeman, that when a person faces such unsurmountable darkness and spiritual liability, that the only way out is by trusting GOD and reaching up to take the mighty hand of JESUS CHRIST. Lumbee Indian Girl: Battered, but Not Shattered let’s the reader know that there is no hole to deep that JESUS CHRIST can’t dig you out of.

Loretta Hunt Freeman Lumbee Indian Girl: Battered, but Not Shattered June 24, 2011 Autobiography No matter how messed up you think your life is, just from using this book as an example, JESUS CHRIST has the final word on it. When it comes to the purpose for this book: “I want readers to know we all go through some type of storm, but the storm does not have to take us down,” the author says. “Not all storms come to take us down; some storms come to take us higher. We must remember that Jesus is in the storm with us. And we must allow Him to be Jesus, the Lord of our life.”

Freeman discusses in frank detail her horrific experiences of growing up as a poor Lumbee Indian girl from South Carolina. She pulls no punches as she tells about suffering such atrocities that would break a grown person’s will to live, let alone that of a child. Without being overtly graphic, she leads the reader seamlessly through her childhood that speaks of a near fatal car accident; a freak accident that lands her in the hospital again, this time with a nail stuck inside of her skull; numerous times of being raped by an older brother, losing her mom to a fatal car accident, to an adulthood marred with a broken, abusive marriage; having to raise a daughter by her self; being ostracized by her church; breast cancer to a beautiful communion/relationship with an ALMIGHTY HEAVENLY FATHER who loves us and is willing to turn our mess into a much needed message. The one thing that every reader can take away from this book is that, no matter if you are a believer who is in need of a boost spiritually, or a non-believer who, frankly, wants to know what the hype is about when it comes to JESUS CHRIST, is that Freeman gives her message in a refreshing manner that doesn’t sound at all preachy. Her story is that, this is what GOD did for me. Now, see what HE will do for you.

I am a sister in CHRIST and we both attend the same church. Knowing her is a privilege. Reading this book brought a summertime back to my spirit. We went through some similar experiences. I highly recommend this book for all who want to know if there is a way out of the hell that you are going through. Ask Freeman, and she will tell you “YES”! And so would I.
