The new “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” trailer is online and shows a pretty good look at what we can expect from the new action movie based on the toy line. The trailer also gives us a good look at the mood and theme of the movie, including a large role for new star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and the fact that G.I. Joe is actually battling its own country. There is also a great cameo at the end of the clip as well.
Here is a look at what we learned from the new trailer for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
The Rock Is the New American Hero
In the first movie, Channing Tatum’s Duke was the main leader of the team, although he answered to his superior officer, Hawk (Dennis Quaid). However, from the opening voice over to the fact that he acts as the team’s leader after they are betrayed, it is clear former WWE superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is leading the group this time around.
The Rock plays Roadblock. We see him and the team hit hard, many of them killed, and it is he who bands them together after the attack. On the other hand, Duke barely makes an appearance in the trailer. It is also ironic that one of the classic G.I. Joe characters was based on a former professional wrestler, Sgt. Slaughter.
One of the best parts of the first “G.I. Joe” movie was the battles between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Well, it looks like there will be even more ninja action in this movie, including an insane looking battle while repelling on the side of a mountain.
With Ray Park back as Snake Eyes, in a costume that already looks better than what appeared in the first movie, it appears the fan favorite character will be back at the forefront again.
The Bad Guys Are Introduced
I’m pretty sure we see Cobra Commander for a slight second in the trailer at about the one minute mark. Other bad guys seen in the trailer include President Zartan, played by Arnold Vosloo from “The Mummy,” and Firefly, played by Ray Stevenson from “Punisher: War Zone.”
Zartan became the U.S. president at the end of the first movie when he took the form of the real president and replaced him in the White House. It looks like he is following the plan to take over the U.S. government for Cobra Commander. Zartan (as the president) takes credit for the attack on the Joes and sets up the sequel’s storyline. Firefly is a classic character from the comics and animated series who worked for Cobra Commander as a ninja and a saboteur.
The Original Joe Is Back
The end of the trailer has Roadblock saying there is one person they can trust. Then the trailer cuts to Bruce Willis, blasting a machine gun before delivering a one-liner.
Willis is Joe Colton, and anyone who knows G.I. Joe history recognizes that name as belonging to the original G.I. Joe, the soldier who started it all. While the first movie was slightly underwhelming, the trailer for the sequel looks to be a big step in the right direction.
